I really enjoy reimagined or retellings of other stories. I also really enjoy the 1986 classic Jim Henson Film The Labyrinth. So when I find a book that is marketed as a retelling of the Labyrinth I kinda go nuts. I remember seeing an ad for this book, before it was released and the hype for it was decent as well, so it was quickly added to the tbr pending its release.
It's release has since come and gone and here we are with about 520 pages on my KU app that I have now read.
The story immediately starts off like an ai skit you'd hear on TikTok while subway surfers plays in the background, but did a good job at getting your attention.
A quick few chapters and we're onto the spice. Gotta say I've read several Labyrinth retellings and Enver is by far my favorite, as far as his mannerisms being similar to Jareth.
The story seemed to have several different themes. Including anti suicide, pro love, finding oneself, and overall emotions.
I didn't truly feel invested in the storyline until about 50% in. Which made the first half feel like it went on forever.
Once it picked up though, I began to see all the hints of foreshadowing throughout the entire story, and slowly began to enjoy the book.
One of my spicy highlights from the story was the shadow clone jutsu 3 way. Gotta read to hear about it.
There is supposed to be a sequel coming out this year, not sure if I'll read it or not.
Overall plot was good, even if it fell off for me personally here and there. Spice was there and has a good quality.
(This is my own personal review based on my opinion on this book. Not everyone enjoys the same books, just because I loved/hated it doesn't mean you will love/hate it. As always, check your trigger warnings.)
